Being an introvert, I initially did not want to write my own wedding vows. I did not want everyone around me to witness the vulnerability that comes with creating your own special wedding vows.

After doing some research on wedding officiants and traditional wedding vows, I quickly changed my mind.

I wanted our wedding to be as special and unique as possible, and writing our own wedding vows was one way to make that happen.

If you’re wondering how to begin this heartfelt endeavor, this guide will walk you through the process of writing your wedding vows step by step.

Step 1: Reflect on Your Relationship

Before putting pen to paper, take some time to reflect on your relationship. Think about the journey you and your partner have been on together, the experiences you’ve shared, the challenges you’ve faced, and the love that has grown between you. This reflection will serve as the emotional foundation for your wedding vows.

I would recommend beginning your wedding vows on the notes app on your phone, that way you have access to it at any time, any place. There were several times where I would be at work or out somewhere and I would think of something to add to my wedding vows and I could easily jot it in the note.

Consider the following questions to get you started on writing your special wedding vows:

How did you two meet?

What do you love most about your partner?

What makes your relationship unique?

How has your partner supported and inspired you?

What are your hopes and dreams for your future together?

Step 2: Set the Tone

Decide on the tone and style you want for your wedding vows. Do you want them to be romantic and poetic, lighthearted and humorous, or deeply personal and heartfelt? The tone should reflect your personality as a couple and the atmosphere of your wedding.

Step 3: Choose Your Core Promises

Every set of wedding vows should contain a few key promises that you make to each other. These promises are the foundation of your vows and should reflect your commitment to one another. Common promises include vows to love, honor, cherish, support, and be faithful to your partner.

Step 4: Recall Special Moments

Think back to the special moments in your relationship. These could be the day you met, your first date, a memorable vacation, or a challenging experience you overcame together. Incorporating these moments into your wedding vows can make them more personal and relatable.

Step 5: Write from the Heart

Now, it’s time to start writing. Pour your heart into your wedding vows, expressing your love and commitment sincerely and honestly.

Avoid clichés and instead, use your own words to convey your feelings. Your guests have been to several weddings in their lifetimes, chances are they will listen to what you have to say if your wedding vows are unique.

Try to add a little joke or anecdote that will make your partner laugh. Don’t be cheesy!

Remember, your wedding vows don’t have to be long; they just need to be meaningful.

Step 6: Edit and Refine

As you get closer to wedding day, you’ll want to type out your wedding vows in a document on the computer.

Trust me on this!

Typing out your wedding vows will allow you to clearly see any spelling or grammatical errors. It will also allow you to move sentences around if they don’t quite flow.

Once you type them out, you’ll be able to see how long they are. If they are too short, add more. If they are too long, take some parts out.

Check on the length that your partner has written.

You two should be reading your wedding vows for about the same amount of time. You don’t want to be reading for ten minutes and your partner is only reading for one minute!

After writing your initial draft, set it aside for a day or two and then return to it with fresh eyes. Edit and refine your wedding vows, removing any unnecessary words and ensuring clarity and conciseness. Practice reading them out loud to ensure they flow smoothly.

Step 7: Seek Feedback

Consider sharing your wedding vows with a close friend or family member who knows you and your partner well. They can provide valuable feedback and help you make sure your wedding vows truly capture your feelings.

I know this seems extremely vulnerable, but reading these wedding vows in front of all your wedding guests is about as vulnerable as it gets, so it’s better to have some practice!

Step 8: Practice, Practice, Practice

Don’t wait until the last minute to practice your wedding vows!

Rehearse them regularly (out loud!), so you can confidently recite them on your wedding day.

This will also help you manage any nerves and emotions you may feel during the wedding ceremony.

Your wedding vows are a beautiful testament to your love and commitment to your partner. They’re not just words; they’re a promise that will carry you through the journey of marriage.

With these steps, you can craft wedding vows that will touch the hearts of everyone present on your special day. Stay tuned for more tips and inspiration on making your wedding day as memorable as possible!
