Build Your Own Postpartum Recovery Kit Before You Leave for the Hospital

As I am still in recovery mode from having my first baby 10 days ago, I wanted to jot down everything that I am loving for my postpartum care. We get so wrapped up in having everything prepared for a newborn that it is easy to forget that your body is going through a life-changing event and you will need extra care after.

In terms of postpartum care for myself, I quickly realized that I truly did not know how to prepare. I’ll be honest, I did not pack a single thing for myself for the hospital hygiene-wise. My hospital told me that they would provide everything I needed while I was there, and I certainly wanted to take advantage of that and save some money while I could.

I was also able to take a bunch of things home from the hospital to get me through the night and first day home. I did still have to have my husband run out and grab some things for me, but for the most part with what I had prepared ahead of time and with the items from the hospital, I was pretty set. In this post, I will list the items that I loved having postpartum to help you make yours a little easier.

My Top 16 Essentials for a Comfortable Postpartum Recovery

  1. Always Discreet Postpartum Underwear

These are great to wear once you get home from the hospital. Since I am cheap and do not like to waste too much, I added a thin pad to these and just switched out the pads when it was full instead of changing the entire underwear with every bathroom use. I love these for sleeping for added protection. They are very comfortable and even though they are basically adult diapers, they really don’t feel too bad. The hospital gave me mesh underwear which is fine for lighter bleeding days.

  1. Always Ultra Thin Pads

These are the pads that I lined my postpartum underwear with. They are thin, so depending on your level of bleeding, you may want to go a little thicker. Keep in mind, if you are adding them to the postpartum underwear, there is a layer of protection from those as well. The hospital will give you super thick pads, I did not love those.

  1. Amazon Basics Dog Pee Pee Pads

This sounds so silly, but I actually heard about buying dog pee pads for postpartum from a podcast. I debated buying them and once I bought them I debated opening them incase I wanted to return them, but let me tell you, they are worth it! Place them around your toilet because you will very likely drip on the floor. This will save your bathroom rugs. I also placed these in front of the shower, so instead of stepping on the rug I stepped on these.

  1. Frida Mom Postpartum Ice Pack Pads

I personally did not buy these because my hospital gave me ice packs and then told me that I should not use them for more than 24 hours after giving birth. However, I have heard amazing things about the Frida ice packs.

  1. Frida Mom Upside Down Peri Bottle

This is an absolute must have! The hospital will give you a peri bottle but it does not curve like the Frida Mom one, so it is more difficult to use. If you are looking for convenience postpartum, you absolutely need this. I bought one of these and kept it in my downstairs bathroom where I spent most of my time and just kept the hospital peri bottle for my upstairs bathroom.

  1. Tucks Medicated Cooling Pads

I ended up purchasing these as soon as we got home from the hospital. Once the hospital nurses told me that I should no longer be using ice packs, they gave me these to use instead. You can definitely feel the instant cooling relief when you use these.

  1. Frida Mom Perineal Healing Foam

I did not use this, but honestly I wish I had bought it. Something I used that I did not like was the Earth Mama Perineal Spray. I did not feel like it really did anything at all and seemed like a complete waste of money. A foam like this would have felt really cooling and soothing. My recovery was pretty quick, so I did not feel the need to purchase this.

  1. Frida Mom Labor and Delivery Postpartum Kit

If you are looking for a one stop shop for your postpartum essentials, this Frida Mom Kit is for you. It includes most of the things you need including a comfortable hospital gown if you do not want to wear the one provided by the hospital.

  1. Lasinoh Nipple Cream

I love, love, love this nipple cream! I actually used this during pregnancy because I was having some burning pain when my body was changing. Make sure you purchase a few of these: you’ll want one for your bedroom, one for the living room, and one for your diaper bag. I tried the MomCozy nipple cream and I did not like the texture and it made my nipples burn.

  1. Lasinoh Disposable Nursing Pads

Breastfeeding or not, you will need some sort of nursing pads. I really like how absorbent these are! They are convenient to use and easy to dispose of.

  1. Lasinoh Washable Nursing Pads

These are a more eco-friendly alternative to the disposable nursing pads.

  1. Medela Nursing Bras

Before baby arrived, I never, ever slept in a bra. That all changed once I began breastfeeding. You will want something comfortable to sleep in to keep your nursing pads in because leakage can happen throughout the hours of the night.

  1. Ekoauer Button Down Nursing Pajamas

These are super comfortable to wear around the house or for sleeping. I have been wearing them during the day when I do not have to leave the house. The buttons and low v-neck of the top make nursing convenient and easy. I have already purchased 3 pairs of these!

  1. Ekoauer Nursing Nightgowns

These nightgowns are so comfortable and soft! They are nice and airy, perfect to keep cool for the postpartum night sweats. Breastfeeding is super easy with the buttons. It’s great that these come in a 3 pack as well.

  1. Ekoauer Nursing Summer Dresses

I bought 3 of these already! They are comfy to wear around the house and also super cute to go out in. Granted, my baby was born in August so these are perfect for hot weather, but I can promise you that I will be wearing them in the Fall around the house as well. Clearly, I love this brand for nursing clothes! Best part is that they are cute enough that you can continue wearing them even when you are done breastfeeding!

  1. Caddy for Postpartum Supplies

You’ll want something to store all of your postpartum supplies in once you have them all together in your bathroom. Don’t forget to grab a second (or third!) if you have more than one bathroom in your house!

Whether you are newly postpartum or soon to be a mama, you’ll want to have these postpartum items prepared ahead of time. The amazing thing about all of these essentials is that you can order them on Amazon and have them shipped to your door very quickly!

Enjoy your new baby and best wishes for a speedy postpartum recovery!
